About the Workshop

In this short workshop (90 minutes), we will look at how to interpret the potential usefulness of the wood in a log before using an axe and froe to rive (split with the grain) the log into appropriate billets. We will then use a side hatchet and drawknife to refine this billet into a long octagonal shape in preparation for turning on the pole lathe.

In traditional woodworking, the creation of a round object like a stool leg, or the masts and spars on a tall ship, begins by creating a square and then working it into an octagon. Participants will have access to their own hatchet, drawknife, chopping block and shave-horse to create an octagonal billet from a log. This billet can be kept as a reminder of the traditional process or brought along to the turning workshop to be turned into a round.

You will also learn the names and uses of the preindustrial tools that formed the foundation of most woodwork and have a chance to put them to use.

About Wisdom Through Wood

At Wisdom Through Wood we have a passion for keeping the tools and skills of pre-industrial woodworking alive, and have shared this passion through our courses and demonstrations at shows and festivals since 2012. We offer one to two woodworking courses each month, ranging from one to nine days long.

Working with green wood, we create beautiful utilitarian objects such as spoons and bowls, stools, chairs and sometimes small buildings. We also coach people through individual woodworking projects in our workshop or at their place, and undertake commissions as well as facilitating team building and professional development programs.

The AWBF has always been a highlight on our calendar and this year we are happy to have the chance to offer some short workshops as well as demonstrating our craft.

1What are the workshop dates and times?
This workshop will run on Friday 10, Saturday 11, Sunday 12 and Monday 13 February from 10:00am-11:30am.
2What is the workshop duration?
This workshop runs for approximately 90 minutes.
3What is the workshop price?
This workshop costs $45 + Eventbrite booking fee per student.
4Where is the workshop located?
At the Blundstone Noisy Boatyard, which is located near Franklin Wharf and next to the Blundstone Shipwright's Village, Hobart Waterfront.
5How many students are there in a workshop?
Each workshop has a limited capacity of up to 4 students.
6Do I need any woodworking experience?
No experience is required. Although, experienced makers, along with beginners, are welcome.
7Do I need to provide my own tools, equipment or materials?
All tools, equipment and materials will be provided for the workshop.
8Is this workshop event accessible?
This is a workshop environment; please expect uneven surfaces and varying levels of access related to the use of workstations and pre-industrial tools.
